There is no formalized research yet on the use of Wikis in teaching and learning, however there are many guides and tips available on how to use wikis in the classroom.  The following tips and guidelines have been developed by the Bosie State University Educational Technology Program and concisely summarize many strands published to date on wiki use.

Suggestions for Wiki Use

  1. Have a shared goal or specific subject for the group to work on
  2. Provide a practice activity or sample to orient people to the environment.
  3. Assign roles to participants if needed such as editors, authors, fact checkers
  4. Create a culture of trust
  5. Assign meaningful, authentic activities
  6. Remind students of deadlines
  7. Clarify how groups will be assessed
  8. Be patient and offer help when needed
